Scents of smoke and ash dominate and obscure the fruit when first you open the bottle. Swirl it around and the light cherry and cranberry fruit emerges, along with a lick of milk chocolate. But the scent and flavor of smoke lingers, presumably from barrel aging, and ultimately your opinion of the wine may hinge on your personal preferences in that regard.
