You don't get sun-ripened Merlot from Monterey the way you do from warmer inland valleys, but this charming wine might surprise you. Yes, it's on the earthy side, with hints of sweeter black cherries and some smoky oak, but it's so well balanced, that it's really delightful. It's also very dry, with manageable tannins.
